Ex-Citibankers' reunion who's who

BUSINESS OPTION
By FLOR G. TARIELLA

MANILA, Philippines —  Where have all the Ex Citibankers gone? What are they doing now?
On Saturday, January 8th is a big reunion of the Citibank alumni. Citibank is well known as the University of Banking with most of its “graduates” leading the banking industry.
The Banking Industry
In the prestigious Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP) board, Executive Director, Cesar Vistusio, is an ex Citibanker and so with Gigi Montinola, BPI President; Abet Villarosa, Security Bank President; Omar Mier, PNB Director; Bobbit Panlilio, Managing Director/Senior Country Officer of JP Morgan; Tony Chua, Allied Bank President; and Lorenzo Tan, RCBC President. Sanjiv Vohra Citi COO sits in the BAP board as well.
Ex-Citibankers who became BAP presidents are Eddie Go (now Hyundai chairman), the late Rafael Buenaventura, Sonny Vistan, Xavier Loinaz, Tony Ozaeta, and Placido Mapa, Topper Coronel, also an ex-Citibanker, was BAP’s past Executive Director.
A number of ex-Citibankers work for the top 5 private banks of the country.
To name a few: In Banco de Oro, Vice-Chairman is Sonny Jacinto while Teddy Montecillo former Monetary board member sits in the board. For Metro Bank, there is Bliz Cuna, EVP, and Joey Chan, SVP of Corporate Banking and Melo Bautista with the investment arm.
BPI has Gigi Montinola as President, Gil Buenaventura as Senior EVP, and Yogi Salcedo as Corporate Banking Head. Philippine National Bank inspired president is Eugene Acevedo with Mon Lim as his chief of staff, Marlene Piccio, Corp bank head, and Joven Hernandez, Retail Banking, Ricky Cebrero in Treasury, Mon Abasolo in IT, Carlette Pama Risk Head, Gig Gonzales Chief Credit officer, Alice Cordero Compliance and Cris Cabalatungan in Audit.
Past PNB president Omar Mier chairs the PNB Excom. In RCBC, we have Pres Lorenzo Tan, Mike de Jesus in corporate banking.
Other banks headed by ex Citi are Union Bank with Tito Ortiz, Vic Valdepeñas, Teddy Panganiban, Hermie Pugeda, Edwin Bautista. Security Bank is Abet Villarosa. Roman Azanza in PBCom.
In the international banks, Bobbit Panlilio and Weena Romulo are with JP Morgan, Nina Aguas for ANZ based in Singapore together with Milo Fadrilan, son of good friend Lyn. Eric Cruz with Deutsche, Alex Patricio, Sylvia Gotauco, of ING, and Manny Narciso, Patty Olbes of HSBC.
In the various fields of industry, you will see a lot of ex-Citibankers who became prominent and are successful in their own way.
Public Service/Other industries
The call of public service was great as some served in the government.
Currently, ex-Citibankers who are in government, are Rene Almendras now Secretary of Energy, and I heard someone say he is one of the “thoroughbreds” in the cabinet; Bernie Vergara, President of GSIS, Taguig Congressman Freddie Tinga; and Max Edralin who continues to be a BSP consultant.
We can’t forget the late Rafael Buenaventura who served as Central Bank Governor, given the Best Central Bank Governor, Management Man of the year award and numerous international awards and well loved by his staff (which includes me).
We also have Sonny Vistan who became President of Land Bank, Boy Cruz and Guia Lim served as Land Bank EVPs, Boy Nazareno President of PDIC, also Lanny Nanagas served as DBP Chairman and SSS President as well, and Rey David former DBP President.
Tito Santos was Undersecretary of Defense and Omar Cruz as Treasurer of the Philippines. Hans Sicat is chair of the PSE and Renee Rubio is with SCCP. Eric Filamor, Tess Cruz, Lope Yuvienco are in financial consultancy.
In telecoms is Gil Genio of Globe while PLDT has Ric Alberto, Annabelle Chua and Manny Aligada, waters big bosses are Ricky Vargas of Maynilad, and Gerry Ablaza of Manila Water.
In real estate, Danny Ignacio is President of Eton and with him is Lennie Mendoza.
A number are real estate brokers Edna del Rosario (who also owns a resort in Antipolo), Meng Dy Dumalasa, Bing Gervasio among others.
Jack Madrid ( President of Yahoo Phils) for Digital Website, and in the medical field, Do Ejercito long time president of Unilab (also UCPB chairman) together with Rey de Guzman, and now Rose Montenegro lady President of Makati Med.
The academe also have ex-Citibankers – Jose Santos at Ateneo de Manila, Freddie Tiu and Professor Fred Cantoria of the University of Guam. Edna Gonzales is with the SM group.
Entrepreneurship/Creative Arts
For a long time, it was only Bert Bravo that I recall formed his own business.
Today, among the successful entrepreneurs are Helen Limcaoco of Little Gym, Bee Madrid with her “Bowery” RTW (with alterations for a “customized fit”), Ritchie Dijamco of Heckys Lechon serving organic lean pigs, and Joji Yap of Pacific Net.
Sonny Vistan and Gilbert Jose are into ice-cream Creamline, which is really good and reasonably priced too.
And who says Citibankers only have left brains?
We have ex-Citibankers who have ventured in the creative arts such as Popo Suanez of Tux and Eugene Villaluz in music.
Mercy Gamboa sold out her paintings in her first one woman show – 3 of which were immediately bought by a Bank President. ( Mercy was the stylist of Flor’s Garden, the Tropical Garden’s coffee table book).
I would say Penk Tan Ching of Pastry Bin with her wedding cakes is an artist herself and so with Robert Blancaflor with his beautiful flower styles. (Robert was my partner in the recent Festival of Trees where he used my edible and medicinal herbs to decorate the table center pieces).
We also have ex Citibankers doing ministry work Zeny Molina, Myrna Locnen, Emily Abonal, Tina Mossesgeld with Betta Silverio quite busy preparing for the Will Graham (grandson of Billy Graham) Celebration in Naga next year.
While some enjoy their “Apos”tolic work as well. I now have 3 apos, one coming up and I never realized how much joy they can bring. Recent retirees are Bong Montes, Alma Horn and Lilibeth Fajardo. Welcome to the club!
So where have all the Citibankers gone? They are everywhere!
I have many pleasant memories of Citibank where I spent 28 years of my career life.
But at no time at all l did I ever imagine a subprime crises and its effect on the premier bank Citibank.
This tells us that the future is so uncertain and that we can’t really BANK on anything, our status, our power, our titles, our finances as it is temporary.
We can’t rely except on the one Above. In a way it was a good awakening. While we can branch out to different areas , even reinvent ourselves as Mercy and Robert did, we can always be bankers especially with the coming new year.
Well, a different sense of a BANKER… someone who Banks On God! Wishing the ex-Citibankers a great alumni party on Saturday, Jan 8th to be held in PNB and to all, a Prosperous New Year!
